The term A-line bob generally refers to the straight line perimeter of the haircut. It means the hair is shorter in the back and angles down to a longer front.

A true A-line haircut will not have any layers or stacking in the back. It should also frame the face in the front, slightly curling under the chin.

Concave Bob

A concave haircut, by definition, is a haircut in which the hair is longer in front than it is in back. This basically means that a concave bob is just another way to say A-line.

Graduated Bob

Graduated bobs are one of the more common types of bobs.

Graduation basically means that it has stacked layers in the back; in fact, some people call this haircut the stacked bob.

The back of a graduated bob can also be more curved (like a horseshoe) rather than a sharp angle. Furthermore, the shape of the layers should follow the perimeter’s angle and get longer towards the front.

The amount of stacking can vary. Some customers like a very low, blended stack; others like shorter layers, so they can even spike them.

The front of a graduated bob is typically shorter and less pointed than the front of an A-line haircut.

Inverted Bob

An inverted bob is just another term for a graduated bob. The same haircut has different names in different places of the world.

One of my favorite modern haircuts is the long inverted bob… a fun and trendy variation of the lob haircut (which we will get to in a bit).

Asymmetrical Bob

The asymmetrical bob is a stylish and modern look; it can either be non-layered or stacked in the back, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. The key defining feature of this bob style is that one side is longer in the front than the other.

Traditional Bob

Unlike the other types of bobs, a typical standard bob (or undercut bob) will be the same length across the whole perimeter. It should slightly frame the face under the chin.

There should be few layers with a traditional bob. The underneath sections should be a tad shorter than the on-top sections, making your hair flip under on its own.

Blunt Bob

A blunt bob is a short haircut where the blunt ends align as a straight edge (meaning no layering). Imagine a ruler – that’s how straight we’re talking!

It’s modern, it’s chic, and it’s super easy to style.

Lob

A lob haircut is just a fancy way of saying long bob.

A super trendy hair look of the last decade, lob hairstyles are one of my favorites. This mid-length bob has a longer length than the others and flatters most face shapes.

It’s incredibly versatile and can be worn with natural curls, soft waves, or even straight hair.

Layered Bob

The layered bob and textured bob are essentially classic bobs loaded with layers, texture, and body.

Haircutting specialist, Chris Jones describes the difference as:

“Textured bobs have a more subtle shape and less maintenance at home. Layered bobs look amazing on the right hair type but require more styling unless you have some natural texture or wave.”

Curly Bob

A curly bob is a shorter haircut where your natural curls are the star of the show. Picture a traditional bob with an extra dash of personality – that’s the curly bob for you!

This bob style accentuates your natural hair type to create a gorgeous, unique look.

Wavy Bob

Likewise, the wavy bob is styled with natural or created waves. It’s like your hair just had a day at the beach – relaxed, carefree, and oh-so-stylish!

The best part? It’s a breeze to style. Just scrunch some sea salt spray into damp hair, let it air dry, and voila! You’ve got yourself a hairstyle that’s as effortless as it is chic.

French Bob

Picture this: a bob haircut that hits right at chin level, often accompanied by a gorgeous set of bangs. That’s the French bob for you! It’s edgy, it’s elegant, and it’s as versatile as they come.

It says, “I’m confident, I’m stylish, and I’ve got that je ne sais quoi that turns heads.”

Additional Tips

Are you ready to rock a bob haircut? I’ve got some fabulous tips for you to keep your bob looking chic and stylish.

  1. Regular Trims: Bobs typically require frequent trims to maintain their shape. Aim to trim your hair every 6-8 weeks to maintain its sharp edges and overall style.
  2. Proper Styling Tools: Bobs are versatile, and having the right tools can help you achieve the desired texture and shape. Quality styling tools, like a good flat iron or curling wand, can help you achieve your desired look.
  3. Texture and Volume: Experiment with different textures and volumes to keep your bob fresh. Use volumizing products for added lift or enhance curls or waves for a more dynamic look.
  4. Consider Your Face Shape: The ideal bob haircut can vary based on face shape. Consult with your hairstylist to determine the most flattering bob style for your face shape. Whether it’s a classic, asymmetrical, or layered bob, the right choice can enhance your features.
  5. Low-Maintenance Options: If you prefer a low-maintenance bob, consider styles that air dry well or require minimal styling. Discuss your styling preferences with your stylist, and they can tailor the cut to suit your lifestyle.

Remember, your bob is an extension of your personality, so don’t be afraid to experiment and find a style that works for you.
